DPI vs PPI: What You Actually Need for Print and Web

DPI confuses a lot of people because it only matters for print. This guide clears it up and shows how to set the right DPI for documents and photo prints.

The short version

For screens, only pixel dimensions matter — DPI is ignored. For print, DPI (dots per inch) controls how large the pixels are on paper. 300 DPI is the standard for sharp photo prints and documents.

See DPI and PPI for precise definitions.

Setting and checking DPI

Set a print resolution with 300 DPI Photo or 600 DPI for fine prints, or change it with Convert DPI. Check what an image currently has with DPI Checker.

For physical sizing, Resize in cm, Resize in mm and Resize in inches convert real-world sizes to exact pixels at your chosen DPI.
